Trent Wing, RAF Air Cadets, is proud to announce that Squadron Leader Simon Dunn has been awarded the prestigious Air Officer Commanding 22 Group Commendation in the New Year Honours List. This accolade recognises his extraordinary dedication, leadership, and service throughout his distinguished career with the RAF Air Cadets.

Squadron Leader Dunn began his journey with the RAFAC as a cadet, rising to the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer. His commitment to service continued when he joined the RAF as a Police Officer, all while supporting the RAFAC as a Service Helper. Upon his retirement from the RAF, he commissioned with the RAFAC in 2007, quickly taking command of an ATC Squadron. Over eight years, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication, which earned him a reputation as an inspirational figure.

Transitioning to a Wing Staff Officer post as a Sector Commander, Squadron Leader Dunn fostered collaboration and teamwork, encouraging subordinates to aim higher and promoting unity among squadrons. However, it is in his current roles as Deputy Officer Commanding Trent Wing and Wing Development Officer that he has truly excelled. His strategic vision and operational acumen have been instrumental in securing the future of numerous units within Trent Wing, including those at risk of closure.

One of Squadron Leader Dunn’s standout achievements is the development and implementation of the Air Cadet Volunteer Instructor Programme within Trent Wing. This innovative initiative redefined the induction process, bridging the gap between initial training and further progression within the Corps. By offering development sessions, courses, and personal mentoring, he has inspired and enabled individuals to pursue uniformed roles, enhancing the overall capabilities of the Wing.

During challenging times, Squadron Leader Dunn provided crucial support to the Officer Commanding Trent Wing, assuming additional responsibilities to address financial constraints, staff absences, and increased expectations. His willingness to step up and share the workload ensured the effective management of the Wing staff team and the continuation of key activities.

As Trent Wing Staff Development Officer, he has dedicated significant amounts of his time to onboarding new volunteers. Through his efforts, 23 Officers, 18 Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, 29 Cadet Warrant Officers, and numerous promotions have been successfully integrated, significantly strengthening the Wing’s leadership cadre. His unwavering commitment to mentoring and fostering professional growth has cultivated a culture of excellence and ensured the resilience and future success of the Wing.

Wing Commander Daniel Withnall, Officer Commanding Trent Wing, said: "Squadron Leader Dunn’s commitment to Trent Wing and the wider RAFAC community has been nothing short of exemplary. His leadership, innovative thinking, and tireless efforts have made an immeasurable impact on our organisation, and this commendation is a fitting recognition of his outstanding contributions."

Trent Wing extends its congratulations to Squadron Leader Simon Dunn on this well-deserved honour and thanks him for his continued service and inspiration to all within the organisation.
